LMDES Event Recap: Madrid Afternoon Soirée
A few weeks ago, over 50 people of color came together one Saturday afternoon to celebrate life and the thriving community of expats in Spain. When living abroad, there is nothing more comforting than feeling like you’re a part of a collective of like-minded individuals.
The afternoon was filled with meaningful conversation, inspiring stories and influencers from many different fields coming together for a memorable time. The event was held in the mesmerizing Nanai Restaurant y Espacio Cultural where we drank and dined all afternoon, indulging in delicacies from salmorejo, cheese plates, hummus, fresh fish, solmillo to many more.
"Thank you for all that you do! LMDES is really changing lives by bringing the community together. It definitely makes me feel more at home knowing there are people I can connect with and be inspired by." — Candice
Nicole Angela spoke on the importance of owning and shaping our own stories in a world that has been created to tell us no. She spoke of the elaborate journeys of mavens like Josephine Baker, James Baldwin and many more, reiterating the fact that people of color have been paving the way and thriving abroad for much longer than society allows for us to believe.
“Thanks so much for another wonderful LMDES event! So inspiring to talk to people who are go getters and look at life with bright eyes, even if things are temporarily not going exactly their way. And Nicole!! I felt like I went to church and heard the word” — Shavi
“Another great event, I had a great time on Saturday! As someone who's not only planning to be a long-term expat here in Spain, but also in a transitory state, it was especially inspiring to meet others like me. Hearing from and meeting Nicole especially struck a chord with me. Kudos!!” — Christine
The afternoon wasn’t just a chance to get to know other people in the community but also to introduce the community to many amazing Spanish brands that we love. We collaborate with Per Purr, a natural beauty brand paving the way in the industry, gifting everyone with their relax oil and one lucky winner, Christiana received over 60€ in products. We also collaborated with the renowned Bogui Dance Club where Jasmine and Malika won entry for two with a free drink and the newest hip-hop spot in town, Go Hard Madrid, where Victoria won entry for 4 with a table and bottle service. We also teamed up with Cervezas La Virgen where Terraun won a tour of the facilities with beer included and Dawn won a six pack of the artisanal beer, delivered straight to her home. Let’s just say, the people who came out to the event, not only left feeling renewed and rejuvenated but they also didn’t leave empty handed.
Moments like these, when the LMDES community can come together in person, meeting, learning and growing together is what motivates us to keep pushing. We’ve grown tenfold in the past months, having reached over 190 countries reiterating the fact that this movement is bigger than us and for that, we are grateful for each and every one of you, our readers.
“It was very inspirational meeting up with brave individuals who left their comfort zones to create a new community for themselves. Keep up the great work LMDES” — Kareemah
