El Girasol Vegetariano is the definition of a hidden treasure. A quaint restaurant in the back streets of Murcia, you wouldn't know that it was there unless you happened to stumble upon this vibrant space. I was introduced by a friend who told me if was one of the best (and one of the few) places to get vegetarian food in the city. By no means am I a vegetarian, but Girasol is now one of my favorite places to dine.
From it's colorful interior to the amazing ladies who hold down fort, you're entranced from the moment you walk in. Fresh market veggies bought daily, they always offer a variety of cuisine ensuring that there is something on the menu that you'll fall in love with. Not to mention, their self-serve salad bar is one of the best that I've ever had, with amazing diverse flavors that I could've never thought of myself.
Not only is the food inviting but the atmosphere is intriguing as well. When I visited (the first of many times), there was an exhibition by international artist and illustrator, ZeroAnodino, covering the walls, sustaining artistic needs as well as gastronomic. The restaurant not only supports local artists but also occasionally hosts different events, catering to the entire community.
Before heading their way, be sure to make a reservation because the tables can fill up pretty quickly. Their menu del día is a well spent 12 euros and their evening menu is just as enticing. Girasol will definitely make you rethink your longing for jamón serrano and will have you longing for new creative ways to eat your veggies.
