Deqn Sue is an amazing, budding talent from California who is making waves across the states, and overseas too! She's witty, wise beyond her years and her lyrics are organic and creative. Listening to her music reminds us of chatting with a long-time friend over a drink: fun, honest and familiar. Although Deqn Sue has been in the game for a while, we first came across her music when she performed at the NPR Tiny Desk Concert Series, and needless to say, we've been blasting her tunes ever since.

Hi Deqn! For our readers who are meeting your for the first time, how would you describe your sound in a few words?
Theatrical, quirky, socially-conscious.
Your lyrics are clever and so creative! What does your typical writing process entail? Are there any noteworthy writing rituals that you rely on to keep you centered?
Mmm not really. I do prefer to write in composition books with a blue ballpoint pen.
What’s one song that you can’t get out of your head at the moment?
Bon Iver - wash.
You wrote “Bloody Monster” after an awkward situation with your roommate. First off, can you tell our readers the story behind the song? And the million dollar question: have they ever heard the song?
I had the unfortunate experience of living with a closet racist who in a moment of rage called me the "N" word. For me, it was a sad realization to experience that, and to know racism is still very much alive in this day and age. Writing the song was cathartic for me. I took all the energy, good and bad, wrote it all down and what I got was bloody monster. As for your million dollar question, you know.... I'm not terribly sure if they've heard the song or not.
Comfort food. We’ve all got a favorite, what’s yours?
Cereal... honey nut cheerios
You’ve got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make an album with any artist (dead or alive): Who do you choose and why?
David Bowie. idk... he just gets it. Artistically, he just gets it.
How do you feel that your voice and style have evolved over the years?
Life is a journey and I feel like the more I create/perform music, the more I become what I'm supposed to be as an artist/person. Since I write my own music, I usually remember where I was mentally and physically when I wrote something and it's rather gratifying to me to see the growth as well as the things that need work.
We’re not just fans of your voice, your fashion sense is absolutely on point! What’s the most worn item in your closet: aka the piece you can’t live without?
Why thank you, I'm flattered. The most worn item in my closet are my hi-top Chuck Taylor's. They're pretty worn out but I love them more now than when I first got them.
A little birdy told us you’ve spent some time in Spain! Tell us all about it! How did you spend your time here?
Yes! That birdy was correct. I spent a year in Valencia, a lot of it on the beach. I traveled Europe quite a bit while I was there and had a BALL. I miss it and can't wait to return.
You do an amazing job at being unapologetically authentic. What advice would you give to young women who are struggling to find their voice?
You are uniquely you. No one can dream the dreams you dream or love the way you love. If you're reading this, you have purpose. Fight for it.
Spill! Are there any big projects on the horizon that we should keep an eye out for?
I can't say much, but I can say that I've started writing new material and I'll be doing some festivals next year.
