How to Prevent Breakouts While Traveling

There's nothing like landing in a new, and exciting destination only to find that your skin is freaking out in the worst way possible! Breakouts are natural, and everyone experiences the not-so-fun rollercoaster ride that is keeping our skin healthy and happy. Oftentimes, we overlook our skin, or have a laser-like focus on the skin on our face while ignoring the rest of our body! Keep in mind that not only is your skin an organ, it's the largest organ in your body, so let's show it all the TLC it deserves!

Why do you breakout when you travel?

There are so many answers to this common question. I could name any number of factors from stress-induced hormonal fluctuations, airport germs, changes in climate and temperature, and of course shifts in diet (and probably alcohol intake). With all those odds stacked against you it may seem like a battle you simply cannot win. So, what can we do?

Here are some tips to prevent breakouts while traveling!

Choose Your Toiletries Wisely

If you're only allowed a carry-on bag like many of us travelers in Europe, make sure you plan ahead. Invest in a variety of practical containers to store your products, and research which products are common and inexpensive enough that you can find and purchase them upon arrival. I recently did this while traveling to Malta. I found the first health food store I could, and stocked up on travel-friendly natural oils that I can use for my face, skin and hair! If you are able to check a bag, make sure that you're bringing products that will also work well in the climate that you're going to be living in! Adjust accordingly, as skincare is far from one-size-fits-all.

Airport Germs

But, Danni, germs are everywhere! Yes, yes, I'm aware, but that doesn't mean you have to willingly dive head first into a pile of bacteria! First rule, don't touch your face! Your hands are nasty, trust me. Next, pack a travel-sized hand sanitizer to keep with you while in the airport and on the plane. Another thing to keep in mind now that we're on the subject of germs is that your phone is filthy! The more you have it on your cheek, the likelier you are to experience a breakout! Clean your phone, dodge a bullet!

Hydration Nation

Airplanes are dry places with loads of recycled air and not much circulation. Do not be that person who's afraid to throw on a facial mask or mist away while in-flight! It's absolutely okay, and your skin will thank you later, believe me! My favorite toner is from Lush and you can always cash me on the plane spritzing till my heart's content!

Airports are over-priced but investing in a bottle of water is just what your body needs! You can also pack an empty bottle and refill it after you pass through security! Don't stop there, though! Keep drinking water throughout your trip! (and pack your vitamins if necessary!)

Find a Routine

One of the reasons that our skin freaks out in a new place is that we shift dramatically from our normal routine. Not only are you adapting to a new climate, new foods and lack of exercise, you're also probably indulging in richer foods and alcohol too! I always pack a jump rope or resistance band so that I can stay active while on the road even if it's just 15 minutes a day! Here are some other ideas about staying active when traveling! I also recommend finding your closest greengrocer's and stocking up on a few basics to ensure that you don't forget to get your fruits and veggies!

Follow these tips, and watch the glow shine through in all your IG photos on your next trip! And if for some reason your skin is being difficult, this spot treatment is small enough to fit in even the tiniest of carryon bags!

There you have it: drink water, don't touch your face, clean your phone, and eat your veggies!
