Ah! Romance! It means something completely different depending on who you ask! While some couples prefer the “traditional” romantic gestures such as flowers, and chocolate, other couples lean more towards the “functional” romance… you know, when your partner cooks dinner and takes care of the clean-up too? Swoon! Is that an empty sink, and the smell of cleaning product in the air? Heart be still! I suppose you can tell which variety I prefer. That being said, I’m also a huge fan of the “grand gesture” as well. one of my favorite things to do is plan surprise trips all over the world with my partner! Here are 5 places to explore with your love! Travel doesn’t have to stop when he or she puts a ring on it!
Switzerland: “Baby, it’s cold outside”
Come on ladies, let’s have a real moment, have you heard of anything more romantic than hot, melted cheese and Swiss chocolate? I thought not! Switzerland is great for the sporty couples looking to hit the slopes and then, of course, cuddle around the fire afterwards. I’ve specifically been to Basel, Switzerland which is a quaint border town that links France, Germany and Switzerland, and the picturesque facades and traditional cable cars scream romance. That, and the fondue, of course.
Venice, Italy: “Flooding never looked so beautiful!”
History oozes from every singly corner and statue and street. Venice, not Rome, in my opinion, is such a romantic city! Watch your man, or woman, turn into a 21st century Magellan as they fiercely and boldly navigate the winding streets and tunnels. I’d book that flight sooner than later, because, well, it’s sinking. Also romantic if you’re into the disaster movie type of deal.
Santiago de Compostela, Spain: “Literature lovers unite!”
Santiago, in the North of Spain, is so stunningly beautiful it’s overwhelming. Although it’s usually pretty rainy, and dark, I argue that it only adds to its charm. Santiago is the “Mecca” of a Western-European wide pilgrimage that many Christians take. It’s famous cathedral towards over the town, and all-year round it’s alive with pilgrims and visitors alike. Even if you didn’t walk the 500 km, stepping on the grounds together as a couple still makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something. Also, a cool thing to do together before the trip is to read the Paulo Coelho novel about his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela!
Valletta, Malta: “Step back in time, and explore the past together”
Don’t sleep on Malta! It may be tiny, but this Mediterranean island was the only thing standing between the Nazis and the Allies during WWII! They, in short, ‘held it down’. The Maltese people are tough, loving, and can cook like you wouldn’t believe! Why should you and your boo check out the island? Because it’s beautiful, looks eerily similar to Jerusalem with the red stone and carved buildings, and there’s beach! It’s small enough that if you want rent a car and drive together or simply stay in in place, it’s okay. If what you want to do is disconnect with your partner, and drop all the traditional “touristy” things, try this paradise! And eat, also eat.
Home, wherever that may be.
For me, home is Chicago, and when I got to show off my city to my partner, I felt pride for my hometown, and also a stronger connection with my significant other as he’d made the effort to cross oceans just to see where it is that I come from. That’s pretty darn romantic!
Traveling in itself keeps your mind sharp, your heart open, and your soul thirsty for new experiences. So, why not share said adventures and misadventures with your significant other? The laughs, the hours spent on trains and planes, the unforgettable meals, the frustration —however temporary — of getting lost in a new place; all of these things can strengthen your bond with your partner and take your friendship and relationship to new, and exhilarating heights. Give it a go, or at least do it for the “Snap”.
