10 Thoughts Every Anxious Traveler Has

Travel is beautiful; however, pre-travel nerves are totally a thing. Don't worry, I'll spare you the graphic details, and simply say, rest assured: you are not alone. Even the most experienced of travelers are not exempt from the sleepless nights, queasy stomach, and frantic pocket grabbing in search of your phone (or passport, or camera). I'm an avid traveler, and I love the rush, the excitement, the pre-travel insomnia, occasional stress induced breakout, and the running list of irrational and unnecessary questions that I ask both myself, and my patient partner. No matter how many minutes I spend flat-laying my travel day outfit, and checking, and double-checking the expiration date on my passport, I still feel anxious before every single trip. I've come to accept it as the universe balancing out this amazing privilege of living in Western Europe and being able to fly roundtrip for less than 100 euros.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
— Ibn Battuta

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” It can also, however, turn your into a nervous wreck, but only temporarily.

Here are 10 thoughts every anxious traveler has had at some point:

I don't look like my passport photo anymore. They better not give me crap!

How many pairs of underwear is too many for a weekend trip? Who am I kidding, there's no such thing as too many pairs of underwear!

*

Can the security guards at the airport actually see my underwear? It doesn't match... and there's a hole in my sock. Whatever, I'm an adult, and I do what I want... but, maybe I have time to change (again).

*

Airport breakfast is wack. Can I get cream cheese through customs? It's not a liquid, right?

*

Should I leave a window open at home? What if it rains? What if someone tries to break in (I'm from Chicago, people) because the window is open?

*

I'm not a good liar. If they weigh my bags, the gig is up: pretty sure I'm rocking up with a smooth 15kg tote. I call it practical. I'm sure the airlines will disagree.

*

100 ml? That's so unrealistic. Who made up that arbitrary number anyway? I can guarantee they didn't have natural hair

*

How is it that everyone else is capable of snapping crisp, clear shots from the plane window, and mine look like screenshots from a 1930's horror film?

*

Please, don't let me sit in the middle, Universe, please! If I have to go to the bathroom, I'm too awkward not to disturb the people next to me. Be cool, Danni.

*

Oh no, did I lock the door?
